Multi-glazed Stoneware
Thomas uses traditional throwing and hand-building techniques, then decorates his pieces by spraying wood-ash and multiple glazes. "It is very satisfying to create a glaze from wood that I've cut, split, and heated the house with in the winter. I like the contrast of the textured wood-ash glaze to the soft matt non-textured glazes," he says. On occasion, Thomas uses ribs, handmade rollers/stamps, and slip to add texture to the surface. He takes advantage of the celadon component in the wood ash glaze to accentuate any variations on the surface of the piece. "Spraying multiple layers of glazes creates nice blushes and a softness and depth that I treasure," he explains. |
